After three decades, Morgantown business Masman Jewelers continues to shine. A full-service jewelry store, Masman offers jewelry, clock and watch repair and custom design.

Much like the watches they repair, the timing was just right when Lisa Morehead was looking for a career change. Masman’s previous owner Mark Shepard had expressed interest in selling the Morgantown business.

“My friend Pat and I attended a Small Business Development Center (WV SBDC) event and decided to purchase the store,” Morehead said. “It was a great seminar that helped us learn how to do the paperwork, the taxes and the different things we would need to be involved in.”

As a WV SBDC client, Morehead works with business coach Sharon Stratton. WV SBDC business coaches are trained to assist businesses in various ways. Business coaches provide advice on how to apply for loans and serve as mentors to business owners. Whether entrepreneurs need to create a business plan, implement a marketing strategy, determine their legal structure, or manage their taxes, the WV SBDC is available to help.

“She assisted us by suggesting marketing ideas for the shop. Sharon explained the process of applying for COVID funding, including the Economic Injury Disaster Loan, the Paycheck Protection Program and the Governor’s Cares Act Grant. She is always available to help,” Morehead said.

The store, located in downtown Morgantown, will soon offer an expanded selection.

“Our customer service makes us unique. We take our time with folks and help them through choosing different options. We love to help customers with their wants and needs,” Morehead said

Currently, customers can buy unique scenic jewelry, and in the future, customers will be able to choose from a selection of Masman’s own line of engagement rings.

“It’s always so interesting to come in and see what new ideas they have and new items in stock. We come up with new ideas as to how they might promote the business,” Stratton said.

The economy has been the biggest challenge as Morehead began her journey as a small business owner.

“Within two years of taking over the business, we moved the store, and the economy had a significant downturn. We tried to stay consistent in our everyday routine and continue offering the best customer service,” she noted.

Masman Jewelers partners with local nonprofit organizations in the Morgantown area to aid the community. They have hosted several successful events and experienced significant community support.

“West Virginia is a wonderful state, and we are so lucky to be part of this community,” Morehead said.
