The West Virginia Small Business Development Center (WV SBDC) and Wonderschool invite you to join us Wednesday, January 29 as we officially kickoff “Childcare West Virginia: Building the Business that Supports Business.” This project is funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission. This initiative will increase access to affordable child care by establishing new profitable child care businesses, helping existing child care providers operate more efficiently, and allowing employers to recruit and retain workers by offsetting the costs of child care.
When – Wednesday, January 29, 1-2 PM
Where – Putnam County Chamber of Commerce / Area 34 Co-working | 971 WV-34, Hurricane, WV 25526
What – A gathering of key stakeholders and media to announce, educate and build excitement for the group’s efforts and plans to increase the state’s workforce while also creating new childcare businesses.
To attend, please contact Will Miller at William.C.Miller@wv.gov to RSVP.
*Note: This project is only for for-profit businesses and for-porfit childcare providers.
About Childcare West Virginia: Building the Business that Supports Business
The project area for the pilot program will include eight coal-impacted counties: Boone, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Mason, Putnam, Roane and Wirt.
The project will consist of two overarching objectives:
- Establish a Childcare Business Assistance (CBA) program that includes:
- Creating 40 new childcare providers
- Providing business sustainability services and coaching to 50 existing childcare providers
- Pilot a West Virginia Tri-Share program where child care costs will be shared between the employee (parent), the employer, and the state.
For the Childcare Business Assistance program, we are actively recruiting qualified candidates who are interested in establishing their own childcare businesses and speaking with existing childcare providers about receiving business coaching and support. The Tri-Share Pilot program is planned to launch in March 2025. The SBDC and Wonderschool are speaking with potential employers about participating in the pilot now.
